Pine of northern origin, with slow growth and dense annual rings, offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and natural resistance to decay. Thermal Performance & Airtightness

Massive timber walls exhibit a thermal transmittance coefficient of U ≈ 0.28 W/m²K for a 275 mm log, without the need for additional thermal insulation. The log's high thermal mass effectively smooths out daily fluctuations in outdoor temperature, significantly reducing peak thermal load. Whole-building airtightness tests (Blower Door Tests) conducted by independent bodies record an excellent average value of qE50 ≈ 0.65 m³/h·m². This performance allows more than 50% of these constructions to approach the top requirements for passive and energy-autonomous buildings. Airtightness depends directly on the absolute precision of factory-processed joints and the correct installation of sealing materials.

Timber walls made of horizontal logs exhibit favorable seismic behavior due to low self-weight and inherent ductility. Compared to concrete or conventional masonry, timber construction absorbs seismic energy through controlled deformation without brittle failure. Design in accordance with Eurocode 8 requires response spectrum analysis, calculation of the behavior factor q (typically 2.0–3.0 for timber), and inter-story drift checks. For multi-story buildings over three floors, finite element analysis and special joint design are required.
